Auckland and the deluges 23 January to 2 February

I have had some finger trouble with the blog that we've been writing and have managed to delete three of them - the last one from New Zealand and then two from Chile.   Even John couldn't restore them for me, and I can’t tell you how angry I am with myself, but it means that from now on I am going to draft the blog in Google docs and copy across! I'll do an edited highlights summary of the brilliant prose / memories that were lost 😳 and will resume blog proper from Ushuaia.

The last few days of our trip to New Zealand from 22 January 2023 were spent in the Auckland area.  We caught up properly with Jane and Geoff Evans, their three kids and four grandchildren.  I'm

Met for dinner with John's cousin Jo, her husband Josh and with Aunty Angela and then house/ cat sat for Jo and Josh while they were away for a week.

While we were house sitting the first of the two big storms to have hit New Zealand this year arrived.  We were fine but houses around Jo and Josh were flooded and parts of Auckland suffered waist deep water.  Auckland airport closed.  Elton John's concert cancelled.   And John's sailing trip with Jane and Geoff couldn't happen.

wet, wet, wet

Jane and Geoff ended up with a house - full as, when we arrived to stay, they already had four visitors - an Australian couple and their two boys whose flight back to Sydney had been postponed…

We were able to visit another cousin, Vicky and family, and see her sister Kelly and meet her two youngsters, Tara and Maia, and our friend Jane.

Two whole months in New Zealand, travelling from Bluff to Cape Reingere (ie far south to northern most tip) was great, especially being able to catch up after such a long time with so many family members and friends.  Thank you to everyone who opened their doors (and their washing machines) to us!
